Once you’ve found the perfect laptop, you must begin your search for the perfect laptop case. There are an overwhelming number of styles to choose from, but not all of them are created equal. Some serve as little more than fashion statements and provide little functionality or protection. Here are some of the things you should look for in a laptop case.
Protection
This is the single most important aspect of a laptop case. If the case fails to offer adequate protection, you may as well just carry your computer in a grocery bag. A good laptop case should be well-padded and sturdy and should also feature a thick, durable shoulder strap or handle.
Resistance to Water
Water resistance is a must for a laptop case because even a tiny amount of water could destroy the delicate circuitry inside of your computer. However, a distinction must be drawn between water-resistant and water-proof. A water-resistant case won’t keep out large spills or keep your computer safe if you drop it in a puddle, but it will be able to withstand small spills and a few minutes in the rain. You can even maximize your protection by applying a spray-on water repellant meant for fabrics.
Weight
A good laptop case should be lightweight and easy to carry. Your computer is already heavy enough, so why make lugging it around more of a chore? If you don’t choose carefully, you could end up with a bag that weighs as much as your laptop. Materials such as nylon and leather, although durable, are very heavy. Try looking for something made from polyester, canvas or micro-fiber.
Comfortable
A case with a narrow strap is not only uncomfortable but can also cause shoulder injury with prolonged use. If you can find a case with a wide and well-padded strap, you’ll be doing yourself a favor.
Features
Some laptop cases are meant to carry only a laptop, but many others come with all of the bells and whistles you could possibly want. What you do with your laptop, where you take it and how long you’re gone with it will determine the features of your bag. Extra pockets are almost always helpful for carrying peripherals, discs, pens and notebooks. However, the extra space should be constructed in such a way that the contents won’t fall out whenever you open the case and should also shield them from damage.
Style
Just like the clothes you wear, the laptop case you choose should reflect your personal style. These days, there are endless colors and patterns available, so there is something to fit everyone’s tastes.
Size
The size of the case you select depends on the size of your laptop. In order to find the exact size of case you’ll need, close your laptop and measure the lid diagonally. If your computer is 14 inches, you’ll need a 14 inch case. If you can’t find one in your computer’s exact size, it can’t hurt to have a bag that is slightly larger.
Cost
Choose a case that provides the best value for the cost. There are a number of inexpensive choices available, but many of them may lack the essential features that make the more expensive laptop cases worthwhile. Besides, cheaper cases could also be shoddily sewn together. Properly securing your laptop should be worth an extra five or ten dollars but not so much more that it would cause financial hardship.
